Abstract: Recently Wolfgang Küchlin gave a talk ("Logical Reasoning in the Auto Industry"), in the Algebra and Logic Seminar, on the use of Propositional Logic to solve configuration problems arising in the automotive industry. He specifically considered the questions (i) of whether a given configuration (i.e., a certain combination of required options corresponding to a possible custom order) is valid, and (ii) which individual parts are needed in order to build a specific customer order (i.e., a specific variant of a car).

In this talk I will address the problem of selecting the valid configurations that should be manufactured in order to satisfy, with in reasonable production costs, a possible large variety of customers’ requests.

This work was developed in the scope of two projects of the University of Aveiro with a car industry company that produces the cables for connecting the electrical components.
